Description
USS Thomas S. Gates (CG 51) was a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser commissioned in 1987 and decommissioned in 2005. Built by Bath Iron Works, it was named in honor of Thomas Sovereign Gates Jr., former U.S. Navy Secretary. The ship's motto, "Defender of the Republic," represented its mission. After serving the U.S. Navy, USS Thomas S. Gates was sold for scrap and dismantled in New Orleans, Louisiana.
