Description
USS Tarawa (LHA 1) was an amphibious assault ship of the Tarawa class, designed for rapid deployment of Marines and their equipment. Built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, it served the U.S. Navy from 1976 until its decommissioning in 2009. Named after the Battle of Tarawa during WWII, the ship was integral to numerous military operations. The Tarawa was later sunk as a target during the 2024 RIMPAC exercise.
