Description
Description
The tiger-art nose piece refers to the Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress “Big Poison” (serial number 43-37894) of the 490th Bomb Group’s 849th Bomb Squadron, based at RAF Eye, England. Delivered in June 1944, Big Poison collided mid-air with another B-17 on 6 February 1945, forcing its crew to bail out; the ball-turret gunner was later killed and the crash also claimed two civilians. Though her service was brief, the aircraft lives on in archives as a symbol of the courage of the bomber crews who flew the daylight offensive over Europe.
